Lymphedema is a chronic disease that remains poorly understood, yet affects millions of people worldwide. At Lympheo , we believe that a better understanding of the disease is the first step towards providing better support for patients.
💧 What exactly is lymphedema?
Lymphedema is abnormal swelling of a part of the body (often the arms or legs) caused by a buildup of lymph , a clear fluid that circulates in the lymphatic system. This system plays a vital role in immunity and the removal of cellular waste . When lymphatic circulation is disrupted—due to a malformation, surgery, cancer, or trauma—lymph accumulates in the tissues, causing discomfort, heaviness, and pain .
🧬 The causes of lymphedema
Two main types can be distinguished:
Primary lymphedema , of genetic origin, which often appears at birth or adolescence.
Secondary lymphedema , which is much more common, occurs after surgery, radiotherapy, infection, or cancer (especially of the breast or pelvis).

⚖️ The most common symptoms
Progressive swelling of an arm, leg, or other area of the body
A feeling of heaviness or stiffness
Tight or thickened skin
Decreased mobility
Localized discomfort or pain
Lymphedema progresses slowly , which is why early diagnosis and continuous management are essential to prevent complications.
💙 How is lymphedema treated?
There is no cure, but several approaches can help control the disease :
Manual lymphatic drainage , performed by trained professionals
Compression bandages and garments to reduce swelling
Exercises adapted to stimulate lymphatic circulation
Daily skincare to prevent infections
And increasingly, the use of connected technologies to track and analyze changes in volume and symptoms
