What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic disease that remains poorly understood, yet affects millions of people worldwide. At Lympheo , we believe that a better understanding of the disease is the first step towards providing better support for patients.

💧 What exactly is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is abnormal swelling of a part of the body (often the arms or legs) caused by a buildup of lymph , a clear fluid that circulates in the lymphatic system. This system plays a vital role in immunity and the removal of cellular waste . When lymphatic circulation is disrupted—due to a malformation, surgery, cancer, or trauma—lymph accumulates in the tissues, causing discomfort, heaviness, and pain .

🧬 The causes of lymphedema

Two main types can be distinguished:

  • Primary lymphedema , of genetic origin, which often appears at birth or adolescence.

  • Secondary lymphedema , which is much more common, occurs after surgery, radiotherapy, infection, or cancer (especially of the breast or pelvis).
